Orthodontic emergencies are an infrequent occurrence. If a problem does arise, it can often be remedied at home. However, if a situation occurs that you are unable to resolve on your own, please call us at your earliest convenience. We will then schedule a time to see you or your child and resolve the situation as soon as possible. Even if you have a scheduled appointment, please notify us as soon as possible so we are able to adequately plan for your comfort and resolution. Please do not come directly to the office; a phone call will allow us to be informed and prepared. If an emergency occurs after normal office hours, contact the office by phone and you will be directed to a staff member. Many times, a temporary solution can be achieved over the phone until a complete solution is achieved during normal office hours.

If your teeth are sore after a visit….
You may take acetaminophen (Tylenol) or other non-aspirin pain relievers while your mouth adjusts to your treatment. A warm washcloth or heating pad may reduce the soreness in your muscles and jaw. Warm salt water rinses help with any type of gum or cheek irritation that you may have in your mouth. A cold drink or Popsicle (both sugar-free) may provide temporary comfort to sore teeth.

If your wire is poking….
try moving the wire away from the irritated area with the eraser end of a pencil. If you are unable to move the wire successfully, cover the poking end with a small ball of wax or sugar-free gum. You may then call our office for an appointment to attend to the matter.

If the main wire or a bracket (brace) comes off or is loose….
Please call our office on the next business day to schedule an appointment to have the item repaired. If you have a situation where you must cut the wire, you may use a fingernail clipper that has been washed and disinfected in alcohol. If the loose bracket is on the terminal end (last bracket) it can be slid off the wire.
SAVE ALL ITEMS THAT COME LOOSE FROM YOUR BRACES INCLUDING ANY BRACES OR WIRES AND BRING THEM WITH YOU TO THE APPOINTMENT. There will be additional charges for replacement/reattachment of broken or lost appliances.

If a separator comes out….
call our office to see if it needs to be replaced. Some patients may lose a separator during treatment and it may not need to be replaced if your next appointment is within a day or two.

A bent headgear facebow or a removable appliance (retainer) that is not fitting well…
is not to be worn until it can be properly adjusted in our office. Call the office as soon as possible to schedule an appointment to have the facebow or removable appliance adjusted. Don’t delay calling to schedule an appointment. If your teeth move out of position, an appliance may have to be remade and additional charges may apply.

A lost or missing retainer….
needs to be replaced as soon as possible, due to the likelihood of the teeth shifting without a retainer. Please call the office immediately. There will be a charge for replacement of retainers.

Direct injuries to the mouth and teeth….
Following a direct injury to your mouth or teeth, whether undergoing orthodontic care or not, you should be seen by your regular dentist as soon as possible to determine if there is structural damage to your teeth. Usually a radiograph x-ray of the involved tooth or teeth is needed to ascertain the extent of the injury. If your orthodontic appliances are dislodged or displaced, we will need to replace or adjust them as soon as possible. Call our office to schedule the necessary appointment(s) to repair your orthodontic brackets.
